Five Tips for DIY Fire, Smoke and Soot Clean Up

Fire is a major problem. Not only does it destroy, but it leaves a mess in its wake too. When you have fire damage at home or in a place of business, getting things back to normal can be a challenge. We’ve put together a few tips to help you with fire, smoke and soot clean up to make things a bit easier.

  • Cloth Items - Remove and replace or clean any cloth-based items. This includes blankets, curtains and towels. These items hold in smoke smell and may make it much more challenging to recover.

  • Wash Down Sold Surfaces - Solid surfaces may need several rounds of heavy cleaning to remove soot. When you get them good and clean you can see what will need repairing or replacing.

  • Use a Scouring Pad or Magic Eraser - For really tough soot stains try a Magic Eraser or a scouring pad with some baking soda sprinkled on it. The extra grit will help you cut through those tough stains.

  • Choose a Good Cleaning Solution - For basic issues, using a solution of hot water, vinegar and dish soap will be a great option. The vinegar helps remove smells and you aren’t using heavy chemicals that can cause more problems.

  • Ventilation is Vital - While you are cleaning, keep windows and doors open if possible. Having good ventilation in the room will improve the smell.
